Description: Oh, it's such a complicated story. John D. Rockefeller started Standard Oil in 1870. In 1911, Standard Oil was broken up into 34 different companies. Standard Oil of New Jersey, one of those companies, had the rights to much of the east including New England. In 1941, it acquired the rights to Pennsylvania, Delaware, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Louisiana. In those states, it was known as Esso. "S-O" as in Standard Oil. In 1973, the company bought Humble Oil and changed the name to Exxon, one of the biggest companies in the U.S. This is a brilliant porcelain covered steel sign. It features the Polar Bear on skis. This sign is 12" in diameter. This sign is probably of Ande Rooney's 1980's signs created to applaud American adventure of our roadways, although it doesn't have the paper on the back. This is a very heavy porcelain covered sign, weighing almost 1 1/2#. It is in good looking condition. It is not bent. On the four holes, it has chips and rusty patina. The top edge is also chipped a bit, as shown. Judge by my many pictures. Shipping will be only $9.00 anywhere in the U.S. I combine shipping to save you $$ on shipping costs.
