Fischer was initially trained in his father’s factory and further developed his skills at Herend before beginning to produce his own ceramics in 1867 (he had opened up his workshop decorating the china products made by other factories in 1864). We believe that this vase was made around the 1870s or 1880s in Budapest. We were unable to find another example quite like this piece with it’s rather unique combination of design, style, and shape. The vase is beautifully decorated throughout with a wonderful assortment of flowers and leaves all embellished with gilded accents. The vase also has gilded bamboo-style elements including unusual twisted and intertwined double handles, upper and lower hexagonal bamboo bands, and 3 flaring bamboo legs seated around a base finial. The bottom of the vase has a blue-colored maker’s mark that is very hard to read but we believe reads FISCHER J BUDAPEST (the letters J & I are the same in Hungarian and, as is the case with this mark, one’s surname typically precedes a first name / initial). One of the sections of the lower bamboo band near the base also has a maker’s stamping that we believe should also read FISCHER J BUDAPEST but the type is oddly set in a very peculiar manner with characters set backwards and/or upside-down as well as transposed. There is also a 3-digit number that is also hard to make out but appears to read 673 (we are guessing that is this design form’s number). The vase is fairly large measuring roughly 13 5/16" in height and roughly 6 3/4" across at its furthest point. It weighs roughly 4 lbs 1.7 oz. The vase has aging, scratches, dirty and/or stained areas, dust, yellowing, staining, discoloration, manufacturing imperfections, and heavy crazing throughout. The bottom of the 3 legs have some heavy wear and what looks like a small chipped area on one of the legs. The vase stands firmly in place and does not wobble. We are not trained in these matters so it is possible that we may be missing other imperfections. With that in mind please study the two dozen photos and let us know if you have any questions. Please note that this will be shipped upside-down to reduce pressure on the legs in transit. This circa 1870s or 1880s rare beautiful large antique hand-painted gilded 3-legged bamboo floral leaf design amphora-shaped vase by Hungarian ceramist Ignác Fischer is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
