Description: Pinus mugo sp. Mughus - Dwarf Swiss Pine - 18 to 24 inches tall - 8 years old Mature Height: 6 feet Aspect: half shade to full sun Hardiness Zone: USDA 3 The Dwarf Swiss Pine, more commonly known as the Mugo Pine, is one of the shortest naturally growing pines in the world and the Mughus subspecies will typically grow to only five or six feet tall. Rather than growing upright they form a round ball, which can be enhanced with regular pruning to form a perfectly spherical pine. Mugo Pines are extremely popular in Japanese gardens, rock gardens, and small landscapes as well as for bonsai. The needles are short and the trees produce plenty of short, pliable branches. Mugo Pines are one of the most cold hardy plants, rated to -50 degrees, but are also thrive in hot landscapes. They prefer well drained soil and full sun. Most states require that all the soil be washed away from the roots for field grown plants which also gives us the opportunity to trim the roots into good form. The tops are pruned as needed depending on the species and size of the tree. Our handling time is 1-3 business days occasionally we skip the day before a holiday since plants will be sitting at the post office anyway.
