Description: Grand Duchy of Finland (Russian Empire)50 PenniäSilver 0.750KM# 20 (an eagle without crowns)1917Mint: Helsinki-VantaaWeight: 2.60 gDiameter: 18.6 mmCoin of a new design, approved by the Senate of the Grand Duchy of Finland in April 1917 (a month after the abdication of Nicholas II from the throne). Minted from 750 silver in the city of Helsingfors (Helsinki). It was used in the monetary circulation of Finland until the end of 1918, although Finland gained independence in December 1917. 1 penny was equal to 1/100 marks. On the obverse of the coin there is the Coat of Arms of the Grand Duchy of Finland of 1856, but without imperial crowns: on the chest of the Russian double-headed eagle there is a heraldic shield depicting a crowned lion surrounded by nine rosettes. The lion in his raised right paw holds a sword and tramples on a saber. The shield is crowned with the German princely crown. In the lower part on the right, near the tail of the eagle, the sign of the minzmeister is indicated - the letter "S" (Isaac Sundel (Sundell) 1912 - 1917). On the reverse of the coin, the denomination in Finnish is indicated in the center: at the top, the number "50", below - "PENNIÄ". Even lower is the year of minting - "1917". The inscriptions are surrounded by two oak branches tied at the bottom with a ribbon. The obverse and reverse sides of the coin have a rim protruding around the circumference with teeth facing inward.
