Description: Ca. Early 19th Century Iron Betty Lamp. The name "Betty" is derived from the German word "besser" (meaning better). These lamps first came into use in the 18th Century. They burned fish oil or fat trimmings and had wicks of twisted cloth. The Betty lamp differs from earlier oil/grease lamps in that it uses an internal wick holder to eliminate the fuel drip common with earlier lamp designs. The exterior of this Betty lamp appears complete and in good condition. However, it is missing the internal wick holder. See last image showing lamp's interior (note remnants showing where it was attached). Please inspect photos carefully.
