Description: Offered is a strikingly handsome edition of "The Origin Of The Species" by Charles Darwin specially bound in an ornate full leather prize presentation binding by famed binder RIVIERE & CO. This copy was published in 1899 by John Murray, London. An octavo-sized volume (5" x 7"), xxi+ 432 pp. including a glossary and index. This copy was specially bound as a prize presentation to a recipient ("Claudius Kenneth Hamilton") and has a presentation certificate in Latin affixed to the inside front cover. The binding is ornately stamped in gilt with a gilt-lettered black leather spine label, hubbed spine, patterned endpapers, and with the top edge of the text block gilt edges. the edges of the inner covers are also stamped in gilt design. The front board is also gilt stamped with an ecclesiastical decoration and the legend "manners maketh man". There is slight rubbing to the spine edges and there is a stain on the rear board.
